Not a Loss. A Learn.

Drew Mestemaker thought his senior year would finally be his chance to start at quarterback.

Then another quarterback transferred in. The season he had pictured was going to look different.

That’s a hard moment when you’ve spent years working toward something. You’ve imagined how it will feel. You’ve told yourself to be patient. Then the opportunity you thought was coming slips away.

Drew still wanted to play quarterback. But he also wanted to make something of the season in front of him. So he played safety. He found a way onto the field, contributed to his team, and kept looking for a chance to pursue his dream.

He had to adjust without letting go of what mattered to him.

If you’ve ever built a business, you probably know that feeling.

The customer you were counting on goes another direction. An expansion takes longer than you expected. You put your heart into a decision, and the results leave you wondering what you missed.

It can follow you home. You replay the conversation, check the numbers again, and wonder what you should have done differently. When your family, your employees, and your own name are tied to the business, a setback can feel personal.

It takes some perspective to look at what happened and ask: What can I learn here? What needs to change? What can I do next?

Not a loss. A learn.

That perspective gives you somewhere to go. Maybe you understand your customers better now. Maybe you’ve found a weakness in the plan while there’s still time to strengthen it. Maybe an uncomfortable experience has given you the judgment you’ll need for a bigger decision ahead.

You can acknowledge the disappointment and still find something useful to carry forward.

It helps to have people around you who can do that with you. People you can call while you’re still sorting things out. Who listen, ask thoughtful questions, and stay with the conversation long enough to help you see the next step.

At Dream First Bank, we want to know how things are going, including the parts that haven’t gone as planned. Those are often the conversations that matter most.

Drew’s senior season gave him a choice about how to respond. He found a way to keep playing. After the season, he kept reaching out to coaches. His dream still had somewhere to go.

Yours does, too.

Whatever hasn’t gone the way you hoped, there is still a next decision to make. And there’s value in everything you’ve learned along the way.

Imagine your future.
